Virtual Worlds or Minecraft French, Level 1 (Gr. 5, 6, 7)

Course Overview

C’est moi! - This is Me!

Your children can learn to love learning, en français! Relationships are our priority, and technology actually nurtures community in this futuristic and engaging introductory French course.

Students meet weekly for a live, teacher-led lesson in a virtual French-Canadian town where they interact with classmates and the virtual French environment. 24 dynamic lessons in 3 units: My House, Fun with Food, and My Style (VW) or Pet Show (Minecraft) include projects such as furnishing and decorating your own home, then giving the class a tour; building or using an existing restaurant to perform a skit based on your own script; and walking and commentating on high-fashion, avatar style!

Classes start in the second week of September and run until approximately mid-May. It is best to participate in live classes in order to have authentic interactions, but if a student needs to start mid-stream or miss an occasional lesson, weekly recordings do allow for flexibility. Following each lesson, students complete “homework” throughout the following week in order to finish assignments and regular practice, using either paper or digital resources including Duolingo and Quizlet.

Students can choose either the Minecraft or 3DU stream for Level 1 French, and if you have prior French experience, teachers are happy to meet online to do a brief placement test to determine if Level 2 or 3 would be a better fit.

Please contact Gord Holden for more information on the Virtual Worlds course, gholden @ onlineschool.ca or Ryan Titley for more information on the Minecraft course, rtitley @ onlineschool.ca.

Time Commitment:

This course is based on one live 45-60 minute lesson, plus approximately 45-60 minutes of homework per week from mid-September to mid-May. A schedule is available at https://hcos.ca/imtschedule.

Reliable high-speed internet is necessary to run the virtual world and other digital resources. PC computer is preferable for the 3DU platform, and either Mac or PC for the Minecraft stream.
