Socials 8

Course Overview

Social Studies 8: Who is my neighbour?

Welcome to Social Studies 8! We are about to embark on a journey through 1,000 years of history! That’s right, a whole millennium of historical events. Each of the incredible medieval civilizations you will study had a massive impact on the historical landscape of our world. They teach us something about our humanity and our relationships with one another. Too often in history people who are “other” or different from ourselves, our culture and our history are treated poorly or as second-class citizens. Too often we ask, “And who is my neighbor?” but never answer the question beyond our own direct community (Luke 10:29). However, this is not what we are called to do. We are called to, “Love our neighbour as ourselves.” (Mark 12:31). This implies a great love and hospitality for those around us who may be different then we are.

In this course, we will examine three foundational peoples and cultures from around the world in the Medieval Era, Europe, Middle East, and Asia. As we study each area, we are looking at some of the first extensive interactions that these peoples had with the “other”. To do this, we will follow the paths of famous historical explorers in Marco Polo and Genghis Khan, but we will also look at lesser known, but just as significant individuals, Ibn Battuta and Zheng He. To get a better perspective, we will also look at the foundational beliefs and knowledge that each culture comes to the exchange with so we can better understand the emergence of the First Global Era. It is this First Global Era that set the stage for our modern Global Village.
