Course Overview

Unit 1: Biology

Eww! Gross! This unit is sure to be a favorite for students as we explore our amazingly designed human bodies and discuss why ‘gross’ isn’t gross, but is totally natural and expected! Students will compile reports, interview adults, write speeches, draw comic strips and in the end, compile a book entitled ‘A Teen’s Guide to the Gross and Glorious Human Body’.

Unit 2: Physics

The laws have changed – it’s no longer a requirement for adults to wear seatbelts, but is this the right choice? We’ll explore Newton’s Three laws of Physics, and apply them to the idea of cars and seatbelts to determine if it’s a wise choice to wear or not wear a seatbelt. In the end, students will become an activist for their choice and should be able to defend their choices based on the labs, results and information they’ve learned through the module.

Unit 3: Chemistry

Do we have any food lovers? Whether you are or you aren’t, we all need food to survive, and even better if it tastes good! Students will apply their Chemistry learning to create a cookbook called, Mix-It-Up – Cooking with Chemistry, involving both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, as well as separated mixtures. Maybe by the end of this module students will be able to cook dinner?

Unit 4: Earth Science

Come explore our universe, created and held in the palm of God’s hand.  Students will enjoy journeying throughout this vast space. With a focus on the Milky Way and its parts, this unit starts off with an extreme environment on Earth that bridges the gap between Earth and Space. We then move beyond Earth to explore the planets and other components of the Universe. Along the way students will be creating a Survival Guide which will help anyone know what is needed to survive in these different extremes, or if it is even possible!

We are offering two options this year:

Asynchronous: This is the traditional Online model of “any time, any pace, any place”. The student works on the course independently. The teacher is available on Skype to help with questions, editing writing.

Synchronous: Students meet with their teacher in a virtual class on Zoom. Cameras are on as our purpose is to build community. The teacher will introduce the lesson and assignment for the week, give instructions, lead discussion, and prepare the students for the week’s work. Students commit to keeping pace with the class and to attending the weekly meeting which will last approximately 15 minutes. To view a class schedule visit https://hcos.ca/syncschedule.


Time Commitment:

This course consists of 4 modules, Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics. Each module is designed to take approximately 7 weeks. Each week consists of two 40-minute lessons in addition to assignments, quizzes and project work.


Students are required to stream videos contained within the course content, download and print assignments and note packages, scan (either by taking pictures or physically scanning), upload their assignments within Moodle, and connect with their teacher through Skype. Synchronous students will meet with their class on Zoom.

Your child is...

  • An enrolled HCOS student

    If your child is already an enrolled HCOS student, you can add a new online course in your parent Encom account. Here are the steps to do this:

    1. Sign into Encom: encom.onlineschool.ca
      What if I don't remember my login info?
    2. In Encom, click on the Course Selection button. 
    3. This will show you all of the courses that are available. If you do not see a specific course that you were looking for, please contact your individual teacher (grades 5-9) or regional grad advisor (grades 10-12).
  • A new student wishing to enroll with HCOS

    To enroll your child with HCOS, go to onlineschool.ca/enrollment-options/enroll-or-register-now/. Read the information and requirements, then click the Proceed with DL Enrollment button, and complete the enrollment form.

    Once you have completed this process, you will receive an email with your username and password for Encom. Then follow the steps for an enrolled HCOS student to add new courses.
