Course Overview

A student reflects on the question: Would you recommend this course to another student? Why?

I would definitely recommend this course to other students. I would recommend it because even though it can be a little bit difficult at times it has taught me a lot of things that will come in handy later in life. It was also nice because I got a chance to create my own things and use my imagination.

Do you enjoy a challenge? Do you enjoy KNOWING you’ve mastered new skills? Do you enjoy reading great novels and seeing what’s going on in a much deeper way? Then this is the course for you!

In two novel studies, Holes by Louis Sachar and the Canadian classic by LMM Montgomery, “Anne of Green Gables” the course gives you an opportunity to respond in a variety of reading strategies ranging from answering higher level thinking questions, making predictions and connections, using art, poetry, journal responses to express ideas and explore the deeper questions of “What picture of life is the author painting?” You will be amazed at how you begin to read your own novels differently!

Writing is a skill, just like playing soccer or the violin. You need to be shown how, to have practice (and more practice!) and to follow your coach’s helpful suggestions for improvement. This course offers you a tool box of skills which are presented, practiced and mastered through creating imaginative fun stories from three pictures, developing and publishing a report on Canada’s History, and writing and writing and writing! Imagine how confident you will feel about your writing after all that!

Ready to join the adventure? We are offering two options this year:

Asynchronous: This is the traditional Online model of “any time, any pace, any place”. The student works on the course independently. The teacher is available on Skype to help with questions, editing writing.

Synchronous: Students meet with their teacher in a virtual class on Zoom. Cameras are on as our purpose is to build community. The teacher will introduce the lesson and assignment for the week, give instructions, lead discussion, and prepare the students for the week’s work. Students commit to keeping pace with the class and to attending the weekly meeting which will last approximately 15 minutes. To view a class schedule visit https://hcos.ca/syncschedule.

Time Commitment:

This course is based on 5 x 45 minute lessons for 30 weeks.

Students are required to purchase the two novels, link to subscriptions from Brain Pop and Ebscohost, contained within the course content, download and print some parts of an assignment, scan (either by taking pictures or physically scanning) and upload their assignments within Moodle and connect with their teacher through Skype.

Synchronous students will meet with their class on Zoom.
